What Does Sportsmanship mean?

Rock Springs Ranch and Kansas 4-H work together to develop safe but rigorous outdoor activities that not only allow campers to have fun but to learn perseverance, patience and responsibility.

The Sportsmanship programming at Rock Springs involves shooting sports, including firearms and archery, as well as our equine program. And while they are trying to hit a target or ride into the sunset they are also becoming more confident and resilient.

Sportsmanship Conduct

Equine Sportsmanship

Horses aren’t only beautiful, powerful and fun to ride, they can teach us lessons that last forever.

Respect: Our youth will learn how to bond with these powerful and sensitive animals in a relationship of mutual trust.

Communication: We will learn to communicate with an open and welcoming body posture that can carry over into everyday life.

Patience: Horses teach us the benefits of slowing down, to living simply and appreciating the moment.

Trust, Responsibility, and Humility: Putting trust in and caring for a large animal whether on the ground or riding, can teach courage, respect and trust.

Technique & Strategy: Interacting with horses teaches us how to react and adapt to different situations.
